San Diego Art Fair
A series of chance encounters led us on our first international adventure, down the hot, dusty road to California for the sun-drenched, palm-shaded beachfront property of San Diego and its official Contemporary Art Fair.
THÉÂTRE ESPACE GO
One of thé finest, if not the finest EM installation ever…this one was a LONG time coming!
Under Pressure — Foufounes Electriques 2011
This year was a special treat…one which saw us working on the highly coveted wall at Foufounes Electriques on St. Catherine!!
Papier 11′ — AGAC — Galerie Pangee
New and unprecedented, the fair was held in the heart of Montreal’s Quartier des spectacles, underneath a gigantic tent.
Eyes Wide Open — Montreal Musee des Beaux Arts
Fred getting some eyeshadow…so cute. “The Korova milkbar sold milk-plus, milk plus vellocet or synthemesc or drencrom, which is what we were drinking. This would sharpen you up and make you ready for a bit of the old ultraviolence.”
Simons — Ste Foy Quebec
We had budgeted out five days to do the contract. Five really intense days, not quite understanding the size of bite we had just stuck in our collective mouths!
Safewalls
“We promised an inside peak at the flurry of creativity that occurred when, On 7 November, 2010, a team of 10 En Masse artists assembled in the 7ième ciel room at Cirque du Soleil Montreal headquarters. SAFEWALLS had commissioned a work, two metres by four metres in size, a piece that would resonate with the spirit of Cirque du Soleil and SAFEWALLS, but that nonetheless allowed the artists the freedom to unleash their imaginations.”
Cegep John Abbott
Spanning three COLD days in late October 2010, shivering through the damp cold and rain, this incredible collaboration stretched across 350 linear feet of plywood!!
Escales Improbables 2010
Strangely, the anonymity of the crew’s costumes seemed to make the diverse passersby all the more comfortable in interacting with the artists in acti
Crux Magazine
“I’ve heard about it, I’ve read about it, I’ve admired some of the work, and I’ve seen photos from some of the many events. It’s been described as a series of artistic conversations and as a non-linear dialogue, but what does that really mean? Sitting around a table covered with shoes in the good company of three other artists, co-founder Jason Botkin answers the big question: What exactly is En Masse?”
Osheaga 2010
Moving from the calm and shade of the arts area with its funky installations to the social hubub of the central junction, on to the reverberating bass and beats of the DJ zone and back again, EN MASSE filled its allotted surfaces right up with its mighty monochrome mélange.
Bombe Sur la Main
36 artists descended upon the ‘Main’ (boulevard Saint-Laurent, entre René-Lévesque et Sainte-Catherine), armed with spray paint, brushes and ink, attacking 365 feet of boarded up facade along the west side of the street.
The DICE Show…Headquarters Gallery
May 2010 saw the advent of the “Dice Show”, by far one of our most experimental projects to date!.
The DICE Show…Headquarters Gallery…PART II
With the final touches on the INCREDIBLE piece at Headquarters Gallery in the bag, we celebrated the accomplishment with a hot and very sweaty party…nothing new to the basement digs of the now defunct gallery (moment of silence).
Art Souterrain 2010
We had the great fortune to receive the space in Eaton Center, along the tunnel level, with the project split into two sections. The first, pre-produced in the Botkin studio, was a massive 30 panel drawing on vellum, designed to fit into a back-lit staircase. A VERY impressive installation!
Smart Design Mart 2009
A crazy two day drawing bonanza at the SDM, in the heart of Montreal’s mile end neighbourhood…a huge 20 000+ sq. ft. space. This was an important project, involving for the first time a smaller selected team, and a relatively ‘small’ surface to work on over the course of two days. As you can see, the results were SOLID!
Redbird Gallery / Art Pop
This event marked the launch of the EN MASSE Mentorship program, now referred to as the In Class Unit, or ICU.
Osheaga 2009
A multi-day rock festival in Montreal, Quebec, that is held annually at Parc Jean-Drapeau on Île Sainte-Hélène every summer.
Pangee — FIRST EN MASSE
Galerie Pangee, located in the heart of Old Montreal, was the birthplace of EN MASSE…the brain-child of Tim Barnard and Jason Botkin.
